Editing and Proofreading Tips for a Flawless College Admission Essay
Tip # 1 – Word count matters.
Check your word count. For the UC Personal Insight Questions, the word count is 350. When you write your first draft, write 600 words. You can trim from there. It’s best to get as close to the required word count as possible without going over it.
Tip # 2 – Answer the prompt/question.
You will distinguish yourself as an applicant if you have at least ONE sentence in your response that directly answers the question being asked.
Tip # 3 – Get eyes on your work.
Have at least two other people read your essays. They will catch things you’ve missed.
Tip # 4 – AI is not foolproof.
Remember that Grammarly and other AI tools have their limits when it comes to context, proofreading, and how the English language works.
Tip # 5 – Be careful about cutting and pasting.
When applying to Harvard, make sure that your essay does not mention that you’ve “always wanted to go to Yale.”
Tip # 6 – If your essays lack flair and sparkle, they’ll be skimmed and put aside.
Use action verbs in the active (not passive) voice, and don’t clog up the page with meaningless adjectives. Make an impact with every sentence.
